HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
The booking form will state 2 to 3 weeks but there is no pressure.
Steve will take your scratch track and craft it into a fully mastered release-ready recording within 2 to 3 weeks. Steve will play guitars, bass, piano, keyboards (including strings), programme drums (using real drum samples and/or drum machine samples depending on your requirements), and loops, help with arrangement, compose any instrumental hooks/motifs that may be required, and liaise with you along the way to make sure he’s on track. Vocals are supplied either by yourself or one of Steve’s session singers. This is all mixed until you’re happy then finally mastered and supplied to you in 3 formats — MP3 (320kbps hi quality), WAV (16 bit 44.1 kHz CD quality) and AIFF (24 bit 48 kHz hi res — broadcast quality, sync ready).
WHAT DOES A PRODUCER DO?
Steve will make sure everything runs to schedule and budget, organise session musicians, help with song arrangement, perform and record instruments as required, programme drums and loops, engineer, mix, master, regularly update you, the songwriter, giving you what you want.

WILL THE SONG AND RECORDING BELONG 100% TO THE SONGWRITER?
YES, any creative work done by Steve is paid for by the fee. His performances, any arrangement or hook suggestions are all included in his fee. This also applies to any session musicians. This is a “work for hire” agreement.
A rough recording of your lyrics and melody. A smartphone recording is fine. With or without accompaniment. This is the starting point for Steve to hear your song.
A song that features any element that you would like to hear in your song. Be that an instrument, sound, tempo, groove, genre. Be as detailed as possible and supply as YouTube links.
Steve’s Rivendell Studio is based around LOGIC PRO X, Universal Audio Apollo 8, Adam A7X, Kemper and WAY too many guitars. Session musicians available include 8 male and female vocalists and pedal steel player. Steve is a professional guitarist and ABRSM Grade 8 piano.
The dark art! The term “mastering” comes from taking one song from a collection of recordings, such as an album or EP, and using that as the master reference for the other songs — to match in terms of level and sonic quality. Nowadays, it refers to putting the final polish on a single recording and making sure it holds its own out in the digital world. Full-time professional mastering engineers can charge £100 plus per song, and if you can afford it, this will always give you the best results. After a 1 to 1 chat with a top LA producer, Steve Brown masters using a combination of his own skills and the online service Cloudbounce. This is included in all SBM productions and is also available as a stand-alone service for £20 per song. This can work wonders on old recordings. A free sample using your own song is available on request.
SYNC LICENSING OPPORTUNITIES FOR TV, FILM, ADS
At the time of writing, Steve has almost completed two 6 month courses on sync — run by industry professionals and active sync artists Michael Elsner and Chris Shreenan-Dyck. There are two paths you can take with your music — the traditional music industry “artist” path and the TV, film and ad industry “sync” path. The second path is ALL about the music, the song. It doesn’t care about your age, looks, genre or era of music. Every good song, well produced can be sync’d. Steve is happy to share his new found knowledge in this incredibly exciting area, have a chat about the importance of being registered with a PRO (tell you what a PRO is), the value of alternate mixes and metadata. This information comes free to any of Steve’s clients. Just ask.
Steve is building up a network of music supervisors, sync agents and ad agencies and reaching out to see what music they need for upcoming TV shows, films and ads. His most recent contract was a 3 song publishing deal with a sync agent. If you would like to have your song in Steve’s library for sync opportunities, hire Steve to make alternate and stem mixes (up to 20 mixes from £40) and, if your song is placed, Steve will take a one-off standard agent’s cut of 25% of your upfront sync fee.
